DAILY CONSTRUCTION UPDATES

Posted Thursday, January 12th

On Monday, January 16th the Female All Age Locker Room will be closed. We will also need to close the Whirlpool on Monday and Tuesday.

The fire protection systems will be connected and workers will need access to those areas.  We apologize for this inconvenience.

Posted Thursday, January 5th at 1:00 PM

We will be installing new fire protection and sprinkler system and replacing the ceiling in the All-Age locker rooms over the next several weeks.

To eliminate disruption to those areas during the day, the work and clean up will be performed at night when the YMCA is closed. The ceiling will remain exposed during the installation period; however, this procedure will NOT disrupt use of the locker room during our normal operating hours.

Posted Thursday, January 5th

The Y will be installing two additional hot water tanks today, which will address all hot water problems.  The installation will be completed by the end of the day.

You may experience some tepid water this morning if the number of people showering is full.  We apologize if you experience this.  Thank you for your patience.

Posted Tuesday, December 20th

As of 6:00PM on Tuesday, December 20th, consistent hot water is resumed in both adult locker rooms.

We are extremely grateful for your patience and cooperation during this very important and difficult upgrade of the YMCA utilities.  All of the newly installed gas-fired heating and cooling systems will result in greater energy efficiency for the Y, which will ultimately reduce our over-all energy cost and diminish our carbon footprint.

On behalf of the entire staff and Board of Directors, thank you for your support!

Sincerely,

Pat Morrissey

Executive Director

  • No hot water in the Men's Locker Room.  Please use All Age Locker Room.
  • Day 1 of demolition of the old Holly Pond School & Front Lobby has begun.  Check out pictures on our Facebook Page.

Posted Thursday, December 15th

Once again I write with apologies for the inconveniences that you have experienced lately during this complicated conversion of our old oil-burning furnaces to new, gas-powered, energy-efficient/green technology.  Had we known in advance that the installation of this utility would present such challenges; we might not have gone down this path. That said we’re almost there!

As you read this, we have a small army of experts (engineers, plumbers, boiler technicians and electricians) working on the problem. They have discovered several inconsistencies within our old plumbing as it relates to the path of hot water and safety mixing valves – all hidden behind walls or in suspended ceilings.  In short, the hot water generated by our new system is being negated by defective old plumbing, mixing/anti-scalding valves. These valves are being replaced (through the night tonight and tomorrow) with the goal to be fully functioning sometime Friday (Monday the latest).

I hope that this helps you better understand the Y’s current hot water dilemma, and I want to assure you that these problems will soon be behind us. Thank you for you continued support during this difficult, yet very meaningful time for the YMCA.

As always, please feel free to contact me anytime.

Sincerely,

Pat Morrissey

Installation of our NEW Natural Gas-Powered heating System will begin on Monday, December 5th.  3 of the 6 showers in both adult locker rooms will be temporarily out of order while the new heating system is installed.  There should be sufficient hot water for everyone, however, please be mindful to limit the time that you normally shower so that everyone can take a hot shower.  We apologize for any inconvenience that this may cause you.

We will begin using our new entrance and front desk beginning Monday, November 28th.  Look for the blue awning!

Posted Tuesday, November 15th

Phase Two of construction is scheduled to begin on Monday, November 28, 2011.  During this time, there will be several changes:

  • We will be using a new entrance, which will clearly be marked on the north side of the newly constructed gymnastics training facility.
  • Holly Pond School and Kid's club will begin using their new temporary facilities in the new gymnastics center.
  • The pool observation area by the lobby will be closed.  We apologize for any inconvenience, but look forward to the completion of our new facility, which will feature two story viewing.
  • There will be a new entrance to the family/ special needs locker room, which will be clearly marked.

We appreciate your patience as we manage through the construction process.  Please know that we have done everything to ensure the safety of our members throughout this process.  We have thoroughly researched and worked with a professional service to ensure the demolition poses no safety risk.

On Monday, October 10th contractors will begin minor excavation in the Y parking lot in order to expose and reconnect existing main water service lines to the YMCA.  Although one of the parking bays adjacent to the new construction will not have full parking, this process will not interupt nursery school drop off, nor will it disrupt Y water use.

The Board of Directors and Staff extend our sincere appreciation for your patience these past several weeks during this very critical and complicated phase of the building project. Weather notwithstanding, construction is can be loud and messy business, and we apologize for any inconvenience this may have caused you.

We have made significant progress over the summer and are pleased to inform you that the first phase of our project is almost complete. In addition, we anticipate many fewer problems and unforeseen building issues in the upcoming Phase II of the project, which will include demolition and rebuilding of the school wing and lobby. Our contractors have scheduled the demolition in early November. Prior to that, the lobby, offices and nursery school will be temporarily located in the new, soon to be the home of our gymnastics gym. We anticipate a smooth transition of spaces, but most importantly, no interruption to your programs and services. We will send out another communication to remind you as that date gets closer.

Please note: In order to keep you better informed of our progress, we have installed a building “Daily Project Update” tab on our website:

http://www.darien-ymca.org/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=205&Itemid=206

We strongly recommend that you to visit this tab frequently for the most current building news and updates. Please note the following:
